Biography
Wen-Hui Tsai is a Taiwanese vocalist, improviser, and composer working between jazz and experimental music. Active across Taiwan and Europe, her artistic practice moves fluidly between composition, improvisation, and cross-cultural collaboration.
Her musical journey began with classical training before she pursued jazz studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where she completed both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, followed by post-Master research. Rather than being defined by genre, Tsai is driven by inquiry. She was drawn to jazz not as a fixed style, but as an open system — a space where questioning and reinvention remain possible.
Through composition and improvisation, she explores the expanded possibilities of the human voice, focusing on the interaction between voice and wind instruments, language, and cultural memory. Her work integrates literary texts, contemporary improvisation, and cross-cultural dialogue to develop a distinctive sonic language.
Tsai leads the Belgian-Taiwanese sextet Vestige and is an active collaborator in various European projects. Her works have been presented across major venues and festivals in Taiwan and Europe, and she has been nominated for the Golden Indie Music Awards for Best Jazz Single. In addition to her creative work, she is an influential educator in Taiwan’s jazz community, teaching ensemble, improvisation, and composition at the university level.
Her practice situates her within a growing field of transnational contemporary creative music.
